Asked Friday, Oct. 30 after his high school team's game about reports linking him to the job, Rivers didn't deny interest, saying \"you never say never.\"\n\nNC State fired Dave Doeren on Oct. 24, seven games into his 14th season with the program, and Rivers' name attached itself to the search almost immediately. He was the 2003 ACC player of the year in Raleigh before a long NFL career, and he's now the head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama, a job he's held since 2021. He has never coached at the college level.\n\nSources told ESPN that Rivers has engaged in serious discussions with NC State about the position, though a deal isn't close. Rivers himself has called nothing imminent. Adding another layer, his son Gunner is a quarterback already committed to play for the Wolfpack.\n\nThe search remains ongoing, with Rivers described by some reports as the focus of NC State's efforts to fill the vacancy.","published_at":"2026-10-31T17:04:35.057505+00:00","source_count":6,"written_from":[{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"Philip Rivers addresses NC State coaching rumors as momentum builds for Wolfpack legend: 'You never say never'","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/philip-rivers-nc-state-coaching-rumors-gunner-prospect-wolfpack/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Philip Rivers leaves door open on NC State job: ‘You never say never’","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/philip-rivers-leaves-door-open-140530507.html"},{"outlet":"ESPN","publisher":"ESPN","title":"Sources: NC State talking to former QB Rivers about coaching job","url":"https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/50335656/sources-philip-rivers-talks-nc-state-coaching-job"},{"outlet":"Pro Football Talk","publisher":"NBC Sports","title":"Philip Rivers on NC State job: \"Nothing's imminent\"","url":"https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/philip-rivers-on-nc-state-job-nothings-imminent"},{"outlet":"New York Post","publisher":"New York Post","title":"NC State homing in on Phillip Rivers in head coaching search","url":"https://nypost.com/2026/10/30/sports/nc-state-homing-in-on-phillip-rivers-in-head-coaching-search/"},{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"Could Philip Rivers coaching NC State work?
