He is a former major league pitcher who joined the Cardinals' front office as director of scouting in 2015 and spent eight seasons as an assistant general manager, most recently overseeing amateur and pro acquisition.\n\nThe hire comes amid a busy offseason in Houston. The Astros also still need a new manager after choosing not to renew Joe Espada's contract following a wild-card series sweep at the hands of the Chicago White Sox, despite Houston having won the AL West.\n\nFlores inherits a franchise at a crossroads, with questions swirling about whether the Astros are headed for a rebuild or will try to stay competitive in the near term. His first major task will likely be finding a new manager to pair with him as the front office reshapes the roster.","published_at":"2026-10-31T17:04:35.057505+00:00","source_count":5,"written_from":[{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"Astros hire Randy Flores as new general manager as offseason filled with questions begins in Houston","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/astros-hire-randy-flores-general-manager-offseason-questions/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Astros hire Randy Flores as new general manager to continue whirlwind offseason","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/astros-hire-randy-flores-general-025704898.html"},{"outlet":"New York Post","publisher":"New York Post","title":"Astros hire Randy Flores as new general manager to continue whirlwind offseason","url":"https://nypost.com/2026/10/30/sports/astros-hire-randy-flores-as-new-general-manager/"},{"outlet":"MLB.com","publisher":"MLB.com","title":"Astros hire Flores as next general manager","url":"https://www.mlb.com/news/randy-flores-astros-general-manager"},{"outlet":"ESPN","publisher":"ESPN","title":"Astros turn to Cardinals exec Flores as new GM","url":"https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/50332157/astros-hire-randy-flores-new-general-manager"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Astros hire Randy Flores as new GM, replacing Dana Brown","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/article/astros-hire-randy-flores-as-new-gm-replacing-dana-brown-002745854.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Astros hire Randy Flores as general manager.
