League-wide, that drops the total from 510 matches to 210, meaning 300 fewer games than a typical season.\n\nThe sprint season will feed into a 16-team single-elimination playoff to crown a champion. Commissioner Don Garber had announced the broader calendar shift back in November 2025, calling it one of the most important decisions in league history as MLS aligns itself with the global soccer calendar.\n\nThe condensed format is meant to ease the disruption of that transition rather than serve as a permanent fixture, giving clubs and fans a short, high-stakes campaign before the league settles into its new rhythm.","published_at":"2026-10-30T22:50:35.094986+00:00","source_count":3,"written_from":[{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"MLS reveals 2027 sprint season schedule ahead of shift to European calendar","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/mls-reveals-2027-sprint-season-schedule/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Every match matters: How MLS’s 14-game sprint season sets up a new era","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/every-match-matters-mls-14-155208690.html"},{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"MLS sprint season could be 'super fun' as details emerge of calendar transition","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7736223/2026/10/29/mls-sprint-season-calendar-flip/"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"2027 MLS Sprint Season schedule unveiled","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/2027-mls-sprint-season-schedule-180000492.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"As 2027 MLS Schedule Released, These 5 Things Stand Out","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/2027-mls-schedule-released-5-184209873.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Nashville SC schedule for 2027 MLS Sprint Season, see every game","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/nashville-sc-schedule-2027-mls-184735612.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Nashville SC schedule for 2027 MLS Sprint Season, see every game","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/nashville-sc-schedule-2027-mls-184735966.html"}],"image":{"url":"https://sportshub.cbsistatic.com/i/2026/10/29/a5b2be50-2d7f-45ff-b3aa-e087ea98b256/mls-2.jpg","credit":"CBS Sports","width":1920},"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
