The infielder will take the $42 million player option rather than test free agency after a rough first season in New York.
Bo Bichette is sticking with the Mets. The team confirmed Friday that Bichette is exercising his player option for a $42 million salary in 2027, opting against hitting free agency after his first season in New York didn't go as planned.
Bichette signed with the Mets in January on a $126 million, three-year deal that came with a $40 million signing bonus, a $2 million salary for 2026, and matching $42 million player options for both 2027 and 2028. By picking up the 2027 option now, he locks in that salary and keeps the rest of the contract structure intact, including next year's decision on the 2028 option.
The move settles one piece of an offseason that is shaping up to be busy for the Mets regardless. President of baseball operations David Stearns has signaled the club will look to add starting pitching at minimum, and another bat joining the lineup wouldn't be a surprise given how the roster performed. Bichette's decision removes one variable from the equation, but it is only the first step in what is expected to be a hurried round of moves before next season.
