After two years of jokes over a bronze likeness that nobody thought looked like him, Miami had the head redone over the offseason.
The Dwyane Wade statue outside the Kaseya Center has a new head. The 8-foot bronze piece was unveiled two years ago to mark the moment on March 9, 2009, when Wade hit a game-winning shot in double overtime against the Chicago Bulls and declared from the scorer's table, "This is my house!"
Problem was, almost nobody thought the face looked like Wade, who spent 15 years with the franchise. The reaction online was unusually unanimous: the statue was bad. Wade himself tried to wave off the criticism at the time, arguing the piece didn't need to resemble him exactly to capture the moment, but the jokes kept coming anyway.
The Heat eventually listened. The face was redesigned over the offseason, and the artists who made the change said it was "the right thing to do" to strengthen the portrait. Wade responded simply: "It may be my likeness, but it will always be our house."
