Yormark took over the role in 2022 and is leaving of his own volition, according to the conference.\n\nThe Big 12 did not elaborate on the specific reason for the timing of his exit. A source familiar with his thinking told Front Office Sports that Yormark had never intended to stay on with the conference indefinitely.\n\nIn a statement, Yormark pointed to the state he is leaving the league in. \"When I accepted this job, my goal was to put this conference on an upward trajectory and truly believe that the future of the conference could not be in better shape,\" he said. \"The next commissioner of this league will inherit a conference that is '16 Strong.' There has never been a better time to be a member of the Big 12 than right now.\"\n\nReports indicate Yormark is expected to take a new job outside college sports, though no further details on that move have been confirmed. During his tenure, Yormark made expanding the conference's footprint a central priority. The Big 12 has not named a successor.","published_at":"2026-10-30T16:49:49.572837+00:00","source_count":7,"written_from":[{"outlet":"Front Office Sports","publisher":"Front Office Sports","title":"Brett Yormark Stepping Down As Big 12 Commissioner After 4 Years","url":"https://frontofficesports.com/article/brett-yormark-stepping-down-as-big-12-commissioner-after-4-years/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark makes surprising career move","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/big-12-commissioner-brett-yormark-144502673.html"},{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark stepping down after college football season ends","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7738944/2026/10/30/big-12-commissioner-brett-yormark-departing/"},{"outlet":"ESPN","publisher":"ESPN","title":"Commissioner Yormark leaving Big 12 for job outside college sports","url":"https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/50327726/commissioner-brett-yormark-leaving-big-12-january"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark will reportedly leave conference to accept role outside college sports","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/college-football/breaking-news/article/big-12-commissioner-brett-yormark-will-reportedly-leave-conference-to-accept-role-outside-college-sports-143356204.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark stepping down after college football season ends","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/big-12-commissioner-brett-yormark-150107043.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Brett Yormark Stepping Down As Big 12 Commissioner After 4 Years","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/brett-yormark-stepping-down-big-150358739.html"},{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"Brett Yormark stepping down as Big 12 commissioner, will remain with league through January 2027","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/brett-yormark-stepping-down-big-12-commissioner/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark leaving for new job","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/big-12-commissioner-brett-yormark-153523211.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark to leave conference","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/big-12-commissioner-brett-yormark-153935319.html"},{"outlet":"Awful Announcing","publisher":"Awful Announcing","title":"Brett Yormark reportedly set to move on from role as Big 12 commissioner","url":"https://awfulannouncing.com/college-football/brett-yormark-leaving-big-12-commissioner.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Brett Yormark reportedly set to move on from role as Big 12 commissioner","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/brett-yormark-reportedly-set-move-160055265.html"},{"outlet":"Fox Sports","publisher":"Fox Sports","title":"Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark Leaving After 4 Years, Gives Statement","url":"https://www.foxsports.com/stories/college-football/big-12-commissioner-brett-yormark-news"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark leaving conference in 2027","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/big-12-commissioner-brett-yormark-170211660.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark is leaving after 4 years of transformational change","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/big-12-commissioner-brett-yormark-181725344.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Brett Yormark’s immediate reaction to leaving Big 12 conference in 2027","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/brett-yormark-immediate-reaction-leaving-190206899.html"}],"image":{"url":"https://frontofficesports.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/2026-10-20T160413Z_1202060181_MT1USATODAY30136067_RTRMADP_3_NCAA-BASKETBALL-BIG-12-MEDIA-DAYS-scaled-e1793372461748.jpg?quality=80&w=1024","credit":"Front Office Sports","width":1024},"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
