Carolina dropped to 3-4 after a 27-19 Thursday night loss to the Packers, with defensive line coach Todd Wash taking over on an interim basis.
The Panthers have had enough. A day after falling to the Packers 27-19 on Thursday Night Football, Carolina relieved defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero of his duties, ending a run that lasted three and a half seasons. Defensive line coach Todd Wash steps in as interim coordinator.
The move comes after another shaky night for Carolina's defense, which couldn't slow down Green Bay while the offensive line also struggled to keep Bryce Young upright. It capped a rough stretch for a unit that has been a season-long problem: the Panthers allowed 59 points in Week 1 to the Bears and 43 points in Week 7 to the Buccaneers, and they currently rank 27th in the NFL in scoring defense.
At 3-4, Carolina is still within shouting distance of relevance, but ownership and the coaching staff clearly decided the defense needed a jolt before things slipped further. Firing a coordinator eight weeks into the season is not a small step, and it signals how little patience remains for a unit that keeps giving up chunks of points. Wash now gets the job of steadying things on short notice, starting with whatever the Panthers' upcoming opponent decides to throw at a defense searching for answers.
