The Packers running back put his arms behind his back after a score against the Panthers, and he says it was a reference to the song Break Every Chain, not his recent domestic violence arrest.
Josh Jacobs scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter against the Panthers and celebrated by putting his arms behind his back, a gesture that immediately drew comparisons online to being handcuffed. Given that Jacobs missed the first six games of the season while on the NFL's commissioner exempt list following a May altercation with his former girlfriend, the celebration read to many as an unfortunate reference to that arrest.
Jacobs says that is not the case. He explained the gesture was planned in advance as part of a two-part celebration tied to gospel music. "Basically, last week, we said the first celebration, when I score, I was going to thank God -- that's what I did last week," Jacobs said. "The second one was going to be Break Every Chain. It's a gospel song. That was going to be the next celebration."
The song is Break Every Chain by Tasha Cobbs Leonard. Jacobs said he was surprised the celebration was interpreted as mocking his arrest, given the explanation ties directly to his faith rather than to the legal episode that kept him off the field to start the season.
