In his Inner Circle newsletter, Byers reports that talks with ESPN leadership have only slightly eased the strain between the Monday Night Football partners, and that Aikman now appears almost certain to leave the network next season.\n\nOne source described it bluntly to Byers: \"It's not a tension-free zone.\" None of that showed up on screen during this week's Eagles-Cowboys broadcast, where Buck got a laugh out of Aikman with a joke about Michael Irvin's constant presence on the sideline.\n\nThe reported strain traces back to Buck's big contract, which has apparently left a mark on the partnership even as the two continue to call games together without any visible friction. For now, the broadcasts remain unaffected, but the behind-the-scenes relationship and Aikman's future with ESPN remain very much in question.","published_at":"2026-10-29T22:47:52.137548+00:00","source_count":3,"written_from":[{"outlet":"New York Post","publisher":"New York Post","title":"Joe Buck-Troy Aikman ‘tension’ has lingered since pregame blowup","url":"https://nypost.com/2026/10/29/sports/joe-buck-troy-aikman-tension-has-lingered-since-pregame-blowup/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Joe Buck, Troy Aikman tension reportedly persists behind the scenes","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/joe-buck-troy-aikman-tension-163044757.html"},{"outlet":"Awful Announcing","publisher":"Awful Announcing","title":"Joe Buck, Troy Aikman tension reportedly persists behind the scenes","url":"https://awfulannouncing.com/espn/joe-buck-troy-aikman-tension-persists-puck-dylan-byers.html"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"‘It’s Not Joe Buck’s Job To Get Troy Aikman a Contract’ — Analyst Slams Cowboys Legend for Being ‘Mad’ Over ESPN Contract Dispute","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/not-joe-buck-job-troy-190353316.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"‘There’s a 50-50 Chance’ — Troy Aikman Drops Bombshell on Broadcasting Future Amid ESPN Contract Drama, Cowboys Front Office Rumors","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/50-50-chance-troy-aikman-093032375.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"‘50-50 chance’ – Troy Aikman gets real about TV future amid Joe Buck feud","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/50-50-chance-troy-aikman-111000291.html"},{"outlet":"Awful Announcing","publisher":"Awful Announcing","title":"Troy Aikman puts chances of being back on television next year at 50/50","url":"https://awfulannouncing.com/espn/troy-aikman-chances-back-on-television-50-50.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Troy Aikman puts chances of being back on television next year at 50/50","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/troy-aikman-puts-chances-being-143026100.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Troy Aikman Reveals ‘There’s a 50-50 Chance’ He Will Be on TV Next Year Amid Tension With Joe Buck","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/troy-aikman-reveals-50-50-150906523.html"},{"outlet":"Awful Announcing","publisher":"Awful Announcing","title":"Troy Aikman feels he backed Jerry Jones into ‘unfair’ corner","url":"https://awfulannouncing.com/nfl/troy-aikman-backed-jerry-jones-unfair-corner.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Troy Aikman feels he backed Jerry Jones into ‘unfair’ corner","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/troy-aikman-feels-backed-jerry-220036653.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"‘Not a tension-free zone’: Joe Buck and Troy Aikman reportedly still not happy","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/not-tension-free-zone-joe-224401689.html"}],"image":{"url":"https://nypost.com/wp-content%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F2%2F2026%2F10%2FGettyImages-1456918612.jpg?w%3D1024","credit":"New York Post","width":5273},"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
