His work with the run-and-shoot helped shape how teams approached moving the ball through the air, and his influence stretched across multiple programs and stops over a long career.\n\nNo cause of death was given. Jones leaves behind a legacy as one of the sport's more distinctive offensive minds, remembered for a system that pushed tempo and spacing at a time when many teams still leaned on more traditional approaches. Tributes are expected from players and coaches who worked under his system over the years.","published_at":"2026-10-29T22:47:52.137548+00:00","source_count":3,"written_from":[{"outlet":"New York Post","publisher":"New York Post","title":"College football coaching great June Jones dead at 73","url":"https://nypost.com/2026/10/29/sports/college-football-coaching-great-june-jones-dead-at-73/"},{"outlet":"ESPN","publisher":"ESPN","title":"Longtime football coach Jones, pioneer of run-and-shoot offense, dies at 73","url":"https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/50321084/long-football-coach-june-jones-dies-age-73"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Run & Shoot pioneer June Jones passes away at 73","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/run-shoot-pioneer-june-jones-182407695.html"}],"more_coverage":[],"image":null,"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
