Despite signing former Ravens kicker Justin Tucker to the practice squad, special teams coordinator Dave Toub made clear this week that Butker is still the guy.\n\nButker has struggled this season, missing five of 16 field goal attempts, including two in Kansas City's 20-3 loss to the Seahawks on Sunday. Toub called Butker's 45-yard miss in that game \"a bad miss,\" adding that short kicks need to be made in tight games.\n\nStill, Toub pointed to progress. He noted Butker went 10-for-10 at Wednesday's practice with Tucker watching, in windy conditions with gusts up to 28 miles an hour. \"We're trying to improve and get Butker right,\" Toub said. \"He's our kicker.\"\n\nTucker, who hasn't played in the NFL since 2024, joins the Chiefs purely as competition and insurance rather than an immediate replacement. For now, Kansas City's plan is to keep working with Butker rather than make a change at the position.","published_at":"2026-10-30T22:05:00.494376+00:00","source_count":4,"written_from":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Chiefs coach explains kicking situation after controversial Justin Tucker signing","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/chiefs-coach-explains-kicking-situation-010504350.html"},{"outlet":"New York Post","publisher":"New York Post","title":"Chiefs coach explains kicking situation after controversial Justin Tucker signing","url":"https://nypost.com/2026/10/29/sports/chiefs-coach-explains-kicking-situation-after-controversial-justin-tucker-signing/"},{"outlet":"ESPN","publisher":"ESPN","title":"Toub: Butker still Chiefs' kicker despite struggles, Tucker signing","url":"https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/50321154/toub-butker-chiefs-kicker-tucker-signing"},{"outlet":"Pro Football Talk","publisher":"NBC Sports","title":"Chiefs STs coordinator Dave Toub: Harrison Butker is our kicker, we're trying to get him right","url":"https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/chiefs-sts-coordinator-dave-toub-harrison-butker-is-our-kicker-were-trying-to-get-him-right"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid Under Fire for ‘Terrible’ Justin Tucker Remark","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/chiefs-head-coach-andy-reid-211115525.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"‘There’s nothing hostile’: Patrick Mahomes addresses Chiefs signing Justin Tucker","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/nothing-hostile-patrick-mahomes-addresses-152357049.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Andy Reid Sparks Outrage Over Chiefs’ Decision to Sign Disgraced Kicker Justin Tucker","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/andy-reid-sparks-outrage-over-162246199.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Chiefs STs coordinator Dave Toub: Harrison Butker is our kicker, we're trying to get him right","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/chiefs-sts-coordinator-dave-toub-174437874.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Chiefs coach: Harrison Butker still the preferred kicker as Justin Tucker joins the practice squad","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/chiefs-coach-harrison-butker-still-180150256.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"‘We’re trying to improve’: Chiefs announce decision on kicker after signing Justin Tucker","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/trying-improve-chiefs-announce-decision-184302640.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Chiefs coordinator defends Harrison Butker after controversial signing","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/chiefs-coordinator-defends-harrison-butker-080423507.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Chiefs coach talks up Harrison Butker’s windy practice prowess with Justin Tucker hovering over him","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/chiefs-coach-talks-harrison-butker-081043101.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Chiefs Coach Explains Veteran NFL Kicker Signing Despite Major Conduct Suspension","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/chiefs-coach-explains-veteran-nfl-214038007.html"}],"image":{"url":"https://nbcsports.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/f225335/2147483647/strip/false/crop/1920x1080+0+0/resize/1920x1080!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fhdliveextra-a.akamaihd.net%2FHD%2Fimage_sports%2FNBCU_Sports_Group_-_nbcsports%2F986%2F706%2Fnbc_pft_chiefsconvo_261029.jpg","credit":"Pro Football Talk","width":1920},"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
