Chargers to stick with McDaniel as playcaller despite winless skid

Jim Harbaugh confirmed the offensive coordinator keeps his job even though the team says it will examine everything during the bye week.

Jim Harbaugh announced Wednesday that Mike McDaniel will remain the Chargers' offensive playcaller, ending speculation that a bye-week shakeup might include a change at coordinator.

The decision comes with the team still searching for its first win, a stretch that has put McDaniel's offense under scrutiny. Harbaugh had previously left the door open, saying the Chargers would spend their time off "looking into everything" as they try to fix what has gone wrong.

That review apparently stopped short of removing McDaniel from playcalling duties. Harbaugh's public backing suggests the coach sees the issues elsewhere, or at least believes a midseason change at coordinator would not solve them.

For now, McDaniel stays in charge of the offense as the Chargers try to turn their winless start around. Whether that faith is rewarded will depend on how the offense performs once the bye week ends and the losing streak is put to the test.
