Anthony Edwards to undergo knee surgery, out up to two months

The Timberwolves star was averaging 33.3 points through Minnesota's 3-1 start before his right knee flared up.

Anthony Edwards is headed for an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee that will keep him out up to two months, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. The surgery caps a brutal turn for a Timberwolves team that had opened the season 3-1 and looked like one of the league's most exciting outfits behind Edwards and new addition LaMelo Ball.

Edwards' knee had been an issue since the preseason, but he played through it anyway, dropping 45 points in the opener and then 47 in an overtime loss to the Cavaliers on Monday. A day later, Minnesota opted to shut him down and deal with the knee now rather than risk it lingering into the games that matter most later in the season.

Through four games, Edwards was averaging 33.3 points and looked like an early MVP front-runner. That conversation is effectively over for this season, since MVP consideration requires playing at least 65 games. The bigger question for Minnesota is what a two-month absence does to a team that was just starting to find its identity with Edwards and Ball sharing the backcourt.
