Soon the rest of Charlotte will be looking up at him.\n\nThe Hornets announced that Bogues' No. 1 jersey will be retired during a halftime ceremony on Feb. 11, when the team hosts Milwaukee. Bogues, listed at 5-foot-3, remains the shortest player ever to appear in the NBA.\n\n\"How ironic is that?\" Bogues said. \"After all those times that you felt like you were looking up, looking up for so many years, at people. Then here comes this particular moment, and when that jersey actually goes up it'll be like I'm the one looking down at the entire world. It's going to be a surreal moment.\"\n\nBogues will become the third player to have his number retired by the Hornets, joining Bobby Phills (No. 13) and Dell Curry (No. 30). He stands as the franchise leader in assists, steals and minutes, a résumé built on quickness and vision rather than height.\n\nThe ceremony is set for next February, giving Charlotte fans plenty of time to plan for a night that flips the usual perspective on one of the smallest players to ever share a court with giants.","published_at":"2026-10-27T21:48:13.498377+00:00","source_count":4,"written_from":[{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"Hornets to retire the jersey of Muggsy Bogues, the shortest player in NBA history","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/hornets-retire-jersey-muggsy-bogues-shortest-player-nba-history/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Muggsy Bogues' No. 1 jersey to be retired by Charlotte Hornets in February","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/muggsy-bogues-no-1-jersey-191103027.html"},{"outlet":"ESPN","publisher":"ESPN","title":"Big honor: Hornets to retire Muggsy Bogues' No. 1 jersey","url":"https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/50299731/hornets-retire-muggsy-bogues-no-1-jersey"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Hornets to retire Muggsy Bogues' No. 1 jersey on Feb. 11","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/hornets-retire-muggsy-bogues-no-182059179.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Muggsy Bogues will have his No. 1 jersey retired by Hornets in February","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/nba/article/muggsy-bogues-will-have-his-no-1-jersey-retired-by-hornets-in-february-190215447.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Hornets to retire legend Muggsy Bogues’ jersey","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/hornets-retire-legend-muggsy-bogues-195551038.html"},{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"Muggsy Bogues, shortest player in NBA history, to have his number retired by Hornets","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7730164/2026/10/27/muggsy-bogues-number-retired-charlotte-hornets/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Hornets plan jersey retirement ceremony for franchise legend Muggsy Bogues","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/hornets-plan-jersey-retirement-ceremony-211148927.html"}],"image":{"url":"https://sportshub.cbsistatic.com/i/2026/10/27/8c230a35-fb4b-4ed2-9e14-9ba057eff34d/muggsy-getty.png","credit":"CBS Sports","width":1920},"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
