The 5-foot-3 Bogues, the shortest player in NBA history, will be honored at halftime of Charlotte's game against Milwaukee.
Muggsy Bogues spent his entire NBA career looking up at everyone else on the floor. Soon the rest of Charlotte will be looking up at him.
The Hornets announced that Bogues' No. 1 jersey will be retired during a halftime ceremony on Feb. 11, when the team hosts Milwaukee. Bogues, listed at 5-foot-3, remains the shortest player ever to appear in the NBA.
"How ironic is that?" Bogues said. "After all those times that you felt like you were looking up, looking up for so many years, at people. Then here comes this particular moment, and when that jersey actually goes up it'll be like I'm the one looking down at the entire world. It's going to be a surreal moment."
Bogues will become the third player to have his number retired by the Hornets, joining Bobby Phills (No. 13) and Dell Curry (No. 30). He stands as the franchise leader in assists, steals and minutes, a résumé built on quickness and vision rather than height.
The ceremony is set for next February, giving Charlotte fans plenty of time to plan for a night that flips the usual perspective on one of the smallest players to ever share a court with giants.
