Lions edge Packers 20-17 on last-second field goal

Jahmyr Gibbs deliberately went down short of the goal line to drain the clock before Detroit's game-winning kick.

The Detroit Lions beat the Green Bay Packers 20-17 on a field goal with one second left, surviving a game they nearly handed away more than once.

Late in the fourth quarter, with under five minutes left and the score tied, Dan Campbell called for a fourth-and-one try from Detroit's own 23-yard line. Jahmyr Gibbs was stuffed in the backfield, turning the ball over on downs and setting up Green Bay with a short field. The Lions defense held and forced a 35-yard field goal attempt from Packers kicker Trey Smack, which Detroit blocked.

Detroit then drove back down the field. With less than a minute remaining, Gibbs broke through to the 11-yard line, picked up the first down at the 5, then intentionally let himself fall at the 3 rather than score, since the Packers had no timeouts left. That let the Lions run the clock down to one second before kicking the winning field goal. Gibbs finished the drive with 37 of his 116 rushing yards on the day.

Mike Tomlin has since defended Campbell's aggressive fourth-down call as sound process even though it nearly backfired.
