San Francisco blew an 11-point lead and lost to the Atlanta Falcons, dropping their first game of the season and falling to 6-1.\n\nThe loss leaves the Minnesota Vikings and Kansas City Chiefs as the NFL's only remaining unbeaten teams. San Francisco played short-handed, and the result was a mistake-filled performance that let a struggling Falcons team pull off the upset.\n\nInside the building, the feeling was less about bad luck and more about stalled progress. Linebacker Fred Warner said the outcome lined up with a lack of growth from the team, suggesting the issues went beyond a single bad Sunday.\n\nThe question now is whether this was a one-off hiccup against a lesser opponent or an early warning sign for a 49ers team that had looked untouchable through six weeks. With the Vikings and Chiefs now standing alone atop the standings, San Francisco has lost its spot among the league's unbeaten teams and will need to answer whether this loss reflects a deeper problem before it becomes a pattern.","published_at":"2026-10-25T22:19:00.200423+00:00","source_count":4,"written_from":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"49ers' undefeated run just came crashing down for one reason","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/49ers-undefeated-run-just-came-224608494.html"},{"outlet":"ESPN","publisher":"ESPN","title":"49ers 'took a step back' against Falcons, drop 1st game of season","url":"https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/50281333/49ers-step-back-first-loss-season-falcons"},{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"Falcons hand short-handed 49ers first loss: A hiccup or a sign of concern for San Francisco?","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7723641/2026/10/25/49ers-falcons-nfl-week-7-result-takeaways/"},{"outlet":"Pro Football Talk","publisher":"NBC Sports","title":"49ers lose their first game of the season as Falcons pull off upset win","url":"https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/49ers-lose-their-first-game-of-the-season-as-falcons-pull-off-upset-win"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"49ers lose their first game of the season as Falcons pull off upset win","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/49ers-lose-first-game-season-201003390.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Falcons – 49ers instant recap: A delightful upset against an undefeated team","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/falcons-49ers-instant-recap-delightful-201422106.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"9 takeaways from 49ers' worst performance of 2026","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/9-takeaways-49ers-worst-performance-210102552.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"3 takeaways from the 49ers loss to the Falcons: Too many self inflicted wounds","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/3-takeaways-49ers-loss-falcons-211917314.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"George Kittle says first 49ers loss will 'sour' bye week – and that's good","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/george-kittle-says-first-49ers-230134246.html"},{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"Falcons stun NFL — but not themselves — knocking off previously unbeaten 49ers","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7724797/2026/10/25/falcons-49ers-nfl-week-7-upset/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Falcons upset 49ers to leave just two remaining undefeated NFL teams","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/falcons-upset-49ers-leave-just-235115627.html"}],"image":{"url":"https://s.yimg.com/lo/mysterio/api/501094865babc99ca4233ebffde546cf322e1fd8a94ed82963be6de5ccb0f262/lightyear_networkapi/resizefill_w1200_h675%3Bquality_80%3Bformat_webp/https%3A%2F%2Fmedia.zenfs.com%2Fen%2Fthe_sporting_news_articles_584%2F935553f88c550686c19b6f11bf498e8b","credit":"Yahoo Sports","width":1200},"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
