Defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman takes over as interim head coach for the remainder of the regular season.\n\nBaylor hired Aranda ahead of the 2020 season, his first head coaching job after four years as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at LSU, including on the Tigers' 2019 national championship team. He opened his Baylor tenure with a 2-7 record in the COVID-19 shortened season, then delivered the best single-season turnaround in school history, going 12-2 in 2021 and winning the Big 12 title along with a Sugar Bowl victory. That mark remains the most wins in a single season in Baylor history.\n\nThe success did not last. Baylor followed that peak with a 6-7 season and then a 3-9 season, and the program never recovered its 2021 form. Aranda finishes his seventh year in Waco with four losing seasons on his resume, prompting the school to move on.","published_at":"2026-10-25T21:34:33.259650+00:00","source_count":6,"written_from":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Baylor reportedly fires head coach Dave Aranda, Joe Klanderman to serve as interim","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/college-football/article/baylor-reportedly-fires-head-coach-dave-aranda-joe-klanderman-to-serve-as-interim-154737026.html"},{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"Baylor fires Dave Aranda: Bears part ways with 7th-year coach after disappointing loss to Kansas","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/baylor-fires-dave-aranda-disappointing-loss-to-kansas/"},{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"Baylor fires head coach Dave Aranda day after loss to Kansas","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7723380/2026/10/25/baylor-football-dave-aranda-fired/"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Baylor Bears fire head coach Dave Aranda after third loss","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/baylor-bears-fire-head-coach-154614391.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Baylor football fires Dave Aranda after 7 years as Bears coach","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/baylor-football-fires-dave-aranda-155513344.html"},{"outlet":"ESPN","publisher":"ESPN","title":"Sources: Baylor fires Aranda day after 1st loss to KU since '07","url":"https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/50277585/baylor-fires-head-coach-dave-aranda-sources-say"},{"outlet":"Fox Sports","publisher":"Fox Sports","title":"Dave Aranda Done In Waco: Baylor Reportedly Fires Head Coach In Midst Of 7th Season","url":"https://www.foxsports.com/stories/college-football/baylor-fires-dave-aranda-interim-head-coach"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Baylor fires coach Dave Aranda after Kansas loss, promotes DC Joe Klanderman in the interim","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/baylor-fires-football-coach-dave-170219374.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Baylor’s first loss at Kansas in nearly 20 years seals Dave Aranda’s fate","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/baylor-first-loss-kansas-nearly-165622154.html"},{"outlet":"New York Post","publisher":"New York Post","title":"Baylor fires football coach Dave Aranda after brutal loss to Kansas","url":"https://nypost.com/2026/10/25/sports/baylor-fires-football-coach-dave-aranda-after-brutal-loss-to-kansas/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Baylor fires Dave Aranda after six-plus seasons as football coach","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/baylor-fires-dave-aranda-six-171908726.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Dave Aranda replacements: Ranking Baylor's best candidates, from Jason Eck to Jeff Traylor","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/dave-aranda-replacements-ranking-baylors-172807325.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Baylor fires Dave Aranda after Kansas loss, names defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman interim coach","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/baylor-fires-dave-aranda-kansas-172603131.html"}],"image":null,"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
