A sack ruled an incomplete pass, a blocked field goal and a 10-second runoff turned the ending upside down before UCF won it in overtime.
UCF beat No. 2 BYU 39-31 in double overtime, a result that looked improbable through most of a final minute that defied explanation. The Knights and Cougars finished regulation tied at 24 after a sequence that included replay reviews, a blocked field goal, a 10-second runoff and a handful of penalties.
The chaos started with UCF at the BYU 38-yard line, when quarterback Keyone Jenkins dropped back under heavy pressure and was sacked, with the ball popping loose. BYU recovered with 10 seconds left, appearing to seal the win. But officials reviewed the play and ruled Jenkins' arm was moving forward at the time of the fumble, overturning the call to an incomplete pass instead of a turnover.
From there the game swung again before finally reaching overtime tied at 24. UCF outlasted BYU through the extra periods, winning 39-31 and handing the Cougars their first loss of the season. Fans at the Acrisure Bounce House stormed the field once the final whistle sounded, capping what both teams' sides called one of the strangest finishes either had been part of.
