The two-time All-Star hasn't pitched since July 4 but avoided season-ending surgery and replaces Chad Patrick on Milwaukee's 13-man pitching staff.
Brandon Woodruff is headed to the World Series after all. The Brewers announced the 33-year-old right-hander made their World Series roster despite not having pitched in a game since July 4 because of a shoulder injury that at one point looked like it would require season-ending surgery.
Woodruff took the roster spot of Chad Patrick as Milwaukee and Tampa Bay submitted their World Series rosters Friday ahead of Game 1 in Milwaukee. It is the latest twist in what has become a remarkable comeback for Woodruff, the Brewers' longest-tenured player, who debuted with Milwaukee back in 2017.
Woodruff said he told the club he didn't want a spot just to have one, but only if he could actually help the team chase a title. "It would mean a ton," he said Thursday about the chance to pitch in the World Series for the first time. "This is why I play. The playoffs are my jam, per se. I love this time of year. I love pitching in the big moments."
He now gets that chance against the Rays, with Game 1 set for Friday in Milwaukee.
