The Colts backup quarterback has been charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession following a traffic stop in Carmel, Indiana on Oct. 12, according to court records.\n\nPolice pulled Richardson over after determining the 2023 Dodge Charger he was driving had an expired registration that had been assigned to a different vehicle. The officer at the scene reported immediately detecting marijuana, and a search turned up marijuana and THC gummies inside the car.\n\nRichardson, 24, is in the final year of his rookie contract. The former No. 4 overall pick lost his starting job to Daniel Jones last season and has spent this year as a backup on one of the league's worst teams, with some wondering if Jones' struggles could open a door back to the field for him.\n\nThe charge adds to a messy stretch for Indianapolis off the field. Teammate Keenan Allen was recently suspended three games after being jailed on drunk driving charges, and Richardson's citation only deepens the sense of dysfunction surrounding a franchise already dealing with a disappointing season.","published_at":"2026-10-23T16:01:00.907894+00:00","source_count":8,"written_from":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Anthony Richardson marijuana charges, explained: Why Colts QB was cited for posession during traffic stop","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/anthony-richardson-marijuana-charges-explained-154600802.html"},{"outlet":"New York Post","publisher":"New York Post","title":"Colts draft bust Anthony Richardson charged with marijuana possession after traffic stop","url":"https://nypost.com/2026/10/23/sports/anthony-richardson-charged-for-marijuana-possession/"},{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"Colts' Anthony Richardson facing charge for marijuana possession, per report","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/colts-anthony-richardson-charge-marijuana-possession/"},{"outlet":"Pro Football Talk","publisher":"NBC Sports","title":"Anthony Richardson charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession","url":"https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/anthony-richardson-charged-with-misdemeanor-marijuana-possession"},{"outlet":"SB Nation","publisher":"SB Nation","title":"Colts QB Anthony Richardson charged with marijuana possession after traffic stop","url":"https://www.sbnation.com/nfl/1133428/colts-qb-anthony-richardson-charged-with-marijuana-possession-after-traffic-stop"},{"outlet":"ESPN","publisher":"ESPN","title":"Colts QB Richardson charged with possession of marijuana","url":"https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/50257962/colts-qb-anthony-richardson-sr-charged-marijuana-possession"},{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"Colts QB Anthony Richardson Sr. charged with marijuana possession in Indiana","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7717192/2026/10/23/anthony-richardson-marijuana-possession-colts/"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Colts QB Anthony Richardson Sr. reportedly charged with marijuana possession","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/breaking-news/article/colts-qb-anthony-richardson-sr-reportedly-charged-with-marijuana-possession-133408765.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Colts QB Anthony Richardson charged for allegedly having possession of marijuana in Carmel","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/colts-qb-anthony-richardson-charged-135202197.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Colts QB Anthony Richardson charged with marijuana possession after traffic stop","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/colts-qb-anthony-richardson-charged-141120783.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Colts QB Anthony Richardson faces alleged marijuana possession charge","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/colts-qb-anthony-richardson-faces-140338133.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Anthony Richardson charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/anthony-richardson-charged-misdemeanor-marijuana-142551902.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Former Florida QB Anthony Richardson charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/former-florida-qb-anthony-richardson-144937917.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson Sr. Charged with Marijuana Possession","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/indianapolis-colts-qb-anthony-richardson-162316203.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Traffic stop leads to misdemeanor marijuana possession charge against Colts QB Anthony Richardson","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/traffic-stop-leads-misdemeanor-marijuana-171327948.html"},{"outlet":"Fox Sports","publisher":"Fox Sports","title":"What We Know About Colts QB Anthony Richardson's Marijuana Possession Charge","url":"https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/anthony-richardson-news-colts-quarterbacks"}],"image":{"url":"https://nypost.com/wp-content%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F2%2F2026%2F10%2Findianapolis-colts-quarterback-anthony-144657126.jpg?w%3D1024","credit":"New York Post","width":3194},"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
