The Lions tight end said he doesn't regret going on \"Pardon My Take\" to discuss his contract situation, but he wanted to make clear he still wants a long-term deal to stay in Detroit.\n\n\"I feel bad if there was any sort of distraction to the team, or my teammates, or the coaches,\" LaPorta said, adding that he thinks there was \"a bit of a misconception\" about his intentions. He said his teammates love, respect and support him, and that they want to see him \"be happy and compensated.\"\n\nOn the podcast, LaPorta had been more pointed, saying it \"sucks\" that a new deal hasn't come together as he plays out the final year of his rookie contract. He also said it's disappointing to take on injury risk every week while feeling like the team isn't \"showing the love,\" referencing the herniated disc and microdiscectomy surgery that ended his last season early. LaPorta is set to become a free agent after this season, and the Lions could still use the franchise tag on him. Coach Dan Campbell said the comments haven't been a distraction for the team.","published_at":"2026-10-23T21:33:45.991871+00:00","source_count":5,"written_from":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Sam LaPorta: No regrets about podcast interview, wants to stay with Lions","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/sam-laporta-no-regrets-podcast-194310100.html"},{"outlet":"Pro Football Talk","publisher":"NBC Sports","title":"Dan Campbell: Sam LaPorta's contract comments aren't a distraction for us","url":"https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/dan-campbell-sam-laportas-contract-comments-arent-a-distraction-for-us"},{"outlet":"Fox Sports","publisher":"Fox Sports","title":"Lions' Sam LaPorta Is Open To 'Get Paid Somewhere Else’ If Contract Negotiations Loom","url":"https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/te-sam-laporta-prepared-get-paid-somewhere-else-lions-dont-get-deal-done"},{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"Sam LaPorta on lack of contract extension with Lions: 'They're just not showing the love'","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7711384/2026/10/21/sam-laporta-detroit-lions-contract-extension/"},{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"Sam LaPorta sounds off about contract situation with Lions: 'I break my f-----g back for the team'","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/sam-laporta-sounds-off-about-contract-situation-lions/"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Former Iowa football TE Sam LaPorta gets candid on Lions contract","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/former-iowa-football-te-sam-235524319.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Dan Campbell responds to Sam LaPorta’s contract frustrations","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/dan-campbell-responds-sam-laporta-163627207.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Dan Campbell: Sam LaPorta's contract comments aren't a distraction for us","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/dan-campbell-sam-laportas-contract-194157144.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Lions coach gets upset and walks off after reacting to star saying he’s fine not playing for team next year","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/lions-coach-gets-upset-walks-193705317.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Lions TE Sam Laporta clarifies contract comments: 'I want to play for this team'","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/article/lions-te-sam-laporta-clarifies-contract-comments-i-want-to-play-for-this-team-194527303.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Sam LaPorta: No regrets about podcast interview, wants to stay with Lions","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/sam-laporta-no-regrets-podcast-194310811.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Insider Gets Brutally Honest on Lions’ Sam LaPorta Contract Situation","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/insider-gets-brutally-honest-lions-223927707.html"}],"image":{"url":"https://nbcsports.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/12229ef/2147483647/strip/false/crop/1920x1080+0+0/resize/1920x1080!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fhdliveextra-a.akamaihd.net%2FHD%2Fimage_sports%2FNBCU_Sports_Group_-_nbcsports%2F292%2F862%2Fnbc_pft_packerslions_261022.jpg","credit":"Pro Football Talk","width":1920},"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
