Newly declassified FBI records, released by the White House after being declassified by President Trump, show that former Rep. Eric Swalwell told federal agents he had a physical relationship with suspected Chinese intelligence operative Christine Fang, known as Fang Fang. The documents detail two FBI interviews with Swalwell, in May 2015 and March 2016 at an Oakland field office, conducted as part of a broader investigation into Fang's campaign contributions, intern placements, and suspected ties to China's Ministry of State Security. Swalwell described the relationship as casual, said the two never dated, and said their last physical encounter was in March 2015; the FBI ultimately found no evidence he committed federal corruption violations and removed him as a subject of the investigation in 2017, though it found Fang herself had violated federal election laws.
