Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced a new proposed FDA rule on Monday aimed at increasing oversight of food additives as part of the administration's Make America Healthy Again initiative. The rule targets the generally recognized as safe (GRAS) loophole, requiring companies to notify the FDA when they determine an ingredient is safe and explain their reasoning, though FDA approval before market release would not be required. The FDA estimates the rule could impose 90 million dollars in costs over ten years, potentially reaching as high as 210 million dollars, and the agency acknowledged it would have a significant economic impact on many small businesses. Kennedy unveiled the policy at an event Monday morning under a banner reading Eat Real Food.
