ICE says Salvadoran man dead following 'medical emergency' at Newark detention center

A 41-year-old Salvadoran detainee, Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, died after a medical emergency while held at the Delaney Hall immigration detention facility in Newark, New Jersey. ICE said he was arrested by agents in Plainfield, New Jersey, in June and was being held pending deportation proceedings when he became ill and was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where he was pronounced dead. ICE stated staff from contractor GEO Group and medical personnel responded to the emergency and that he had received required medical screenings while in custody. Local officials, including Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill, called for accountability and cited it as the second death at Delaney Hall in less than a year, following the December death of another detainee.
