President Donald Trump launched a White House initiative called Freedom Haulers that streamlines the commercial driver's license process for military veterans while continuing a federal crackdown on non-English-speaking and improperly licensed commercial truck drivers. Under the program, veterans with heavy-vehicle military experience can waive the CDL road-skills test, and in some states the written knowledge test, while veterans without such experience can access expedited training. Officials said 34 states have joined or are working to join the Even Exchange Program, and trucking company Werner Enterprises pledged to hire 1,400 veterans over the next year. Transportation officials said more than 24,000 commercial driver's licenses have been removed for failing English-language proficiency requirements and more than 28,000 CDLs were canceled after being deemed improperly issued to noncitizen drivers.
