A newspaper investigation reported that operatives aligned with Mary Peltola spent months recruiting a second candidate named Dan Sullivan to run against Senator Dan Sullivan in Alaska's Senate race. The New York Times headlined it "Inside Democrats’ Secret Effort to Stack Alaska’s Midterm Ballot With Another Dan Sullivan".
One person said to have been recruited into the race described going along with the effort despite understanding that the people behind it were not acting in his interest. ""I’m not naïve," Salisbury told the Times. "1I had to have that general idea that they’re not in it for me."", New York Post reported.
Following the report, the governor of Alaska ordered a probe into the Peltola campaign over its alleged links to the same name candidate. New York Post headlined it "Alaska governor orders probe of Mary Peltola Senate campaign over ‘Decoy Dan’ Sullivan scandal". Fox News headlined it "Alaska's governor orders investigation after NYT report on alleged Dem-linked Senate election scheme". BBC News headlined it "Alaska governor orders probe into Democratic campaign's alleged links to same-name candidate".
Trump called for Peltola to be removed from the ballot over the matter.
A lawsuit referred to as the DOJ lawsuit was fast tracked by a judge even as Peltolas campaign sought to have it dismissed before Election Day.
The lawsuit alleges that the recruited candidates purpose in running was to reduce the number of votes cast for Senator Sullivan thereby benefiting Peltolas campaign. "The DOJ claims that Daniel J. Sullivan's "2sole purpose" of running "is to benefit the Peltola campaign by reducing the number of votes for Senator Sullivan."", CNBC stated.
A supporter of the senator argued that the episode was intended to sow confusion around the election and lay groundwork to question its results if the outcome were unfavorable. "this is clearly about trying to sow confusion or sow doubt or set the stage to undermine the results of the election if the administration doesn't like what the voters will have to say."3", Fox News said.
Another ally went further characterizing the effort as an attempt to mislead Alaska voters into backing the wrong candidate so Peltola would be more likely to win. Reason said: "Peltola, who was well aware of the scheme, is trying to trick the people of Alaska into voting for the wrong person so that she's more likely to win."
A spokesperson for the senators campaign said voters would hold Peltola accountable for what they described as dishonesty and would decline to rank her on the ballot as a result. ""Peltola will be held accountable this election for her dishonesty and deception. Alaskans will leave Peltola unranked on the ballot because of her dirty tricks,"4 Scott told The Daily Wire.", The Daily Wire said.
The real Dan Sullivan accused his rival of running a secret operation to trick Alaskans.
Peltola rejected the accusations casting the lawsuit as a desperate attempt by her opponents to cling to power by enlisting allies in Washington to further rig the system. CNBC said: "This is clearly a very desperate attempt to cling to power, using his allies in Washington, D.C., to rig the system even further," Peltola said."
