President Trump announced a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin under which Russia will begin supplying diesel fuel to the American and global marketplace. "I have just concluded a highly successful discussion with President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, wherein it was agreed that Russia will immediately supply over 300,000 Tons of Diesel Fuel to the American and Global Marketplace, another 500,000 Tons during the month of November, and 1,000,000 Tons immediately thereafter,"1, Axios said.
Trump said the arrangement would help bring down fuel costs for Americans and people around the world. Breitbart said: "Between our TOTAL CONTROL of the Strait of Hormuz, and this great announcement on Russian Energy, Diesel Prices for Americans and, indeed, the World, will be COMING DOWN, IN RECORD NUMBERS, AND FAST!"2 He also made a separate claim about Iran in the same message. Breitbart said: "Iran will not have a Nuclear Weapon!"2
Breitbart headlined it "Trump Announces Deal with Putin to Deliver Russian Diesel to U.S.". The Wall Street Journal headlined it "Trump Strikes Deal With Putin for Russian Diesel". HuffPost headlined it "Trump Says U.S. To Get Diesel From Russia, Relaxing Pressure On Moscow To Ease Prices Before Midterms".
CNBC headlined it "Trump's diesel agreement with Putin accused of contradicting Russia sanctions law".
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reacted sharply to the announcement, calling it unfair and dishonest. The Guardian said: "Zelenskyy reacted furiously to Trump’s announcement of the deal with Vladimir Putin , calling it “3absolutely terrible” and “not fair and not honest”."
He argued the arrangement benefits Russia at Ukraine's expense. "It plays into Russia’s hands — allowing it to kill more, wage war for longer, have even less respect for America, and inflict even greater losses and damage on the world,"4, HuffPost said.
Other critics raised similar concerns about the deal's implications for Russia's war effort. "Propping up Putin’s war economy is morally wrong as he uses that money to bomb cities,"3, The Guardian said. "This is what we warned anyone who would listen: Trump isn’t the slightest bit trustworthy when it comes to Russia,"4, HuffPost said.
At least one assessment described the timing of the announcement in blunt terms. "You know, it looks like a happy birthday present for Putin. It looks absolutely terrible,"1, Axios said.
Separately, there was commentary suggesting Ukraine's continued strikes on refineries could strain relations with Washington. "Zelensky is misreading the room. By continuing to hit refineries, he is eroding the good will that he has built with Trump over the last six months,"1, Axios said.
Meanwhile, discussions around a new peace plan were also set to take place with a Ukrainian delegation.
