President Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani sat down together at Gracie Mansion for a wide ranging conversation that observers described as friendly. The two also discussed plans for Sunnyside Yard. A Council member noted that since the leaders last discussed the project months earlier, no funding has come from Congress and no public meetings have taken place to move it forward. "“Since the last discussion on Sunnyside Yard months ago between the mayor and president there is no funding from Congress nor any public meetings to move this project forward,” Won said in a statement."1, Politico said.
The gathering marked a rare moment in the history of the mayoral residence. The Guardian noted: "It was the first presidential visit to the historic riverside residence in 45 years, following Ronald Reagan, who met there with Ed Koch in 1981."2 The Daily Wire noted: "Presidential visits to Gracie Mansion are rare. John F. Kennedy went in 1962, when Robert F. Wagner Jr. was mayor, and Ronald Reagan followed in 1981."3
The warmth between the two men drew notice given their past disagreements. When asked about her communication with the president, Mamdani offered a simple description of their contact. "“I speak to him on the phone whenever I need to,” she told reporters in Manhattan."1, Politico said.
The friendliness on display did not sit well with everyone. One prominent conservative activist voiced sharp criticism of the president for embracing the mayor. "“I am a die hard Trump supporter and today I am feeling demoralized because Mamdani is a full blown communist jihadist. He is the spiritual leader of the communists in America and he met with the President today in NYC less than 45 days before the midterms,” right-wing activist and MAGA champion Laura Loomer argued on social media."4, Fox News said.
A veteran Republican strategist pointed to the tension this creates for those hoping to use the mayor as a political target ahead of the midterms. "“You’re trying to say, ‘Here’s how extreme they are,' and the president’s saying, ’I love this guy,” said veteran Republican strategist Doug Heye."5, ABC News said. ABC News headlined it "Republicans want to turn Mamdani into a bogeyman for the midterms. Trump just made that harder".
The meeting also came against a backdrop of ongoing friction over immigration enforcement in the city. Fox News reported: "Trump and Mamdani have consistently clashed over immigration enforcement, with tensions intensifying after federal officials announced that ICE had arrested more than 2,100 people across New York during a monthlong operation dubbed "4Operation Rotten Apple" as of earlier this month."4
